Casting Shadows

Exhibition dates: July 19 – August 30, 2019

with an opening reception Friday, July 19, 6 – 9p

Free participatory workshop Saturday, July 20, 12 – 6p (drop in anytime)

Brice Garrett’s Casting Shadows is an installation of jewelry, sculpture, and print. The work uses production materials, techniques, and the language of adornment to explore associations with the body, labor, and value. The work complicates the narrative of producing by carving  out, reconfiguring, and deconstructing the process – reimagining the methods that generate form and shape. The installation ultimately questions what becomes the mold and what becomes the object, what is discarded and what is valued, and what is seen and what is unseen. Casting Shadows materializes these negotiations and relationships between high and low materials, the body and object, production and process, and making and exchanging.

Info about the free workshop Saturday, July 20th:

Join visiting artist Brice Garrett in a FREE hands-on workshop and installation at the Baltimore Jewelry Center on Saturday, July 20 from 12 – 6p.  Throughout the day, visitors will create large scale, plaster “gemstone” pendants through the act of stamping, mold-making, and casting. The completed pieces will be displayed in the studio and will evolve as the community participates. Participants can drop in anytime between 12 – 6p and can make as many plaster gemstones as they would like; all gemstones will become part of an evolving community installation that will be displayed at the Baltimore Jewelry Center.
